Moving Abroad: Navigating the Challenges and Embracing the Adventure

Moving abroad

We live in a globalized world that has brought both people and companies closer together. This also means that every year more people choose to cross national borders to, for example, live out their dream as a Dane abroad or pursue a career abroad.

Many companies have subsidiaries and local branches around the world. It offers great opportunities to replace everyday life with a new life outside Denmark’s borders. A move abroad requires a big decision, but will also have a big impact on you and your family.

Make the decision together

If you have a family, you should of course involve your family in your decision whether to accept a job abroad or not. This is because a move abroad will have major consequences for your family – whether you travel alone or take the family with you. It requires a tough decision, as a move abroad will usually mean that your better half has to drop his job and your children have to be taken out of school so that you can say yes to the position abroad that you may have dreamed of for many years.

Necessary considerations

Before you decide to move abroad with your family, you should think about:

  • What is the salary level in the country you will be working in compared to the level in Denmark?
  • Are you health insured? If not, how will you be? – In the USA, for example, you must have health insurance, which you must pay for yourself.
  • Will you be provided with accommodation? – If so, is it furnished?
  • If you have to bring your furniture and belongings, you must find a competent moving company that can move your belongings to the country in which you will live.
  • How much vacation do you have? – That way you know when you can go home to visit Denmark at the earliest.

Language challenges

When you have taken the step and exchanged everyday life for a new one abroad, both you and your family can look forward to many new challenges – including encounters with cultural differences and barriers. Language can be a challenge. Maybe you can already speak the language, maybe not. There is no doubt, however, that both you and your family will soon get the hang of it, as virtually your entire everyday life will take place in a foreign language.

An experience for life

When you have moved abroad, you as a family also have the opportunity to have some unique experiences together. At the weekends you can go on excursions and experience your new homeland together. It can bring you as a family closer together, just as you will be able to make some unforgettable memories that you will always be able to look back on with great pleasure – even the challenges that you may face along the way. Because a move abroad can help make you stronger together.
